Wine extracted from the grape cultivated in volcanic soil one of the most pleasant surprises that Lanzarote has to offer; not only for its fine quality, but also for the spectacular landscapes that created in the La Geria. The island’s wines have been appreciated for centuries; especially the wines made from the malvasia grape.
Famed for its robust flavour, malvasia, also known as “malmsey” has a clear deep yellow colour with and almond nose. Its delicate, but intense, aromas balance with the occasional touch of acidity. Historical figures sush as king Charles III, William Shakespeare, Goldoni and Walter Scott were all known to have extolled the virtudes of this wine.
Lanzarote has an Appellation of Origin Control Board which regulates the quality of the wine, and their endorsement is a guarantee of a good-quality wine. The white malvasía is particulary good, whether seco (dry), or Semidulce (medium-sweet). The roses rosados are fruit young wines with less alcohol content and are also highly recommended.
Some companies, mostly restaurants, are permitted to re-label wines made by producers who are recognised by the Appellation of Origin Control Board and sell them under their own brand name such as the Museo Agrícola El Patio which uses wine from Bodegas Reymar
