The history of this municipality is not outstanding. It has a past marked by misery, successive external invasions, and the emigrations the beginning of the XX century. It is starting from the arrival of the tourism when it flourishes with
more intensity.
Their name comes from a degeneration of
the term Faria. from the time of the Conquest, but its pre-hispanic name is ignored. A neighborhood's record 1587 recalls that there was a pile of about 80 to 100 people. At this time it was the only town of' Lanzarote, plus the capital:
Teguise. The most devastating pirate attacks were those of Morato Arraéz's (or Amurat), in August of 1586, who burned all the palms - by luck they sprouted in another time-: and the 1618 attacks in which the population was betrayed after taking refuge in the Cave of los Verdes.
In 1776, the population was already constituted with 1 000 people, of which 300 were located in Máguez. and about 10 in Ye or Guinate. In 1900, the population changed tO over 3.200 people, being already established a family in
Arrieta and another in Punta Mujeres. The maximum population bench mark belonged to 4.500 penple in 1950. The church was built in 1619 having, along the time, diverse setbacks. The storm in 1956 was the most important and only last the tower.
The Asunción Virgin is the patron saint and her image was sculpted by Luján Pérez.
