Protected Areas of Lanzarote

There are 13 natural protected areas on Lanzarote among which the National Park of Timanfaya stands out. It has been recognized as such since 1974.

In total, there are 35.029 protected hectareas, this repreents 41% of the island. Yaiza is the municipality with the greatest amount of protected areas.

The nature values and goods that are protected are repersented with the following rank:

Timanfaya National Park

This area was declared NaturalPark on August 9, 1974. An area comprised of 5,107 hectares, with a 30 km. perimeter and is 540 m. maximum high.

Archipelago of Chinijo Natural Park

It is formed by all the islands in the north of Lanzarote (La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste), the fringe ofthe westem coast ofthe Famara

Protected Landscape of La Geria

It is constituted of 5.255,4 hectares. The traditional agrarian landscape is the purpose for its protection.

Tenegüime Protected Landscape

The protection purpose is the ravine landscape. Scarce longitude, only 4 km. It starts from the peak of Famara Old Massif, next to the Peñas del Chache

Nature Monument of Los Ajaches

They are old geologic mountain formations corroded by the erosion. They correspond to the first terrestrial blooming of Lanzarote

Nature Monument of La Cueva de Los Naturalistas

1.600 m. extension of underground gallery, and 2.1 hectares of surface in the municipal terms of Tías and Tinajo.

Nature Monument of La Corona

The eruptive process that affected the north of the island few thousands years ago . Covered 1,797.2 hectares

Natural Park of the Volcanoes

Most of the surface is fields of lava corresponding to the eruptions of 1730 - 36 and to the eruption of 1824.

Nature Monument of Montañas del Fuego

It is the central part, and the highest of the National Park of Timanfaya. An extension of 392,5 hectares

Nature Monument of Islote de Halcones

The perimeter surrounds the Island completely, being adjusted to the contact of historical basaltic calderas with the oldest materials not buried by them.

Place of Scientific Interest of Los Jameos

The underground aquatic habitat and concretely the species that inhabit in there are the main purpose for protection.

Integral Natural Reserve of the Islets

The geographical boundary belongs together with the perimeter, starting from the lines of low tide, of Montaña Clara's islands, Roque del Este and Roque del Infierno or del Oeste;

Place of Scientific Interest of Janubio

The halophilous habitat and the associate species, as well as the traditional activity from obtaining salt as it is practiced today are the protection purpose.
