Nature Monument of Los Ajaches

Covered 3.009,5 hectares in the municipal term of Yaiza.

They are old geologic mountain formations corroded by the erosion. They correspond to the first terrestrial blooming of Lanzarote (Serie 1), with jolting blooming (of volcanic rock) dispersed to the south and more recent eruptive processes (Series 11) in Montaña Bermeja.

Atalaya de Femés (608 m.) is the most dominant point of the massif. It is a volcanic cone with a rounded summit. It has an approximate age between 15.5 and 13.5 m. yrs. Although it is outside of the protected area. It is one of the Ajaches most characteristic points. Hacha Grande (561 m) is located inside this area. And finishing this series we can locate Montaña de la Breña Chica. From here the hillside descends toward the south, with certain harshness, until a stony plain of soft relief culminating in Punta de Papagayo.

The east coast is steep and it harbours some fossil beaches. In the south part it is more gentle and some of the more active and attractive beaches of Lanzarote are located here as: Papagayo, Playa Mujeres, El Pozo, etc. For this reason a large number of vehicles run around this area and on leaving the track, cause serious destruction to the ephemeral existent vegetation.

Furzes and some gramineous are the predominant vegetation in the whole protected space since it is not very varied. The same as with the wildlife. The goat is the dominant mammal due to the excessive shepherding in the area. The cory's shearwater is the most common bird with some colonies in the east coast. Kestrels, some hawks and rarely Egyptian vulture, petrels, common tem, or ospreys can also be observed.
